the whole thing.

annotated contents

10/22/16 now with less spam: blue car, blue car (1998):
eleven “pushkin sonnets” of “auto”-biography. ran as installments
in _the_ten_page_news_. my longest verse effort by quite a ways.

(andrew marvell take-off from _indy_unleashed_
[#9—spring ’99]).

06/25/19 essay on criticism: (1998)
alexander pope take-off. with zines.
forgiveness can be less divine than vain/
we shouldn’t err by being too humane.

(ten-year old “microzine” hand-colored.)

06/20/20 the abyss looks back: photo of me & shelves.
announcing 10pp/10y (the ten page ten-yearly).

06/22/20 the same old thing: a-four-hat four ways.

summarized on one page”.

07/29/20 the real is at war with the virtual: yesterday’s news.

this one is a little longer.

every penny—if i do say so myself”

cash $1 price
centerfold (handmade “handwriting” font)
the medium is the message! (word balloon)

the other side (four “page”s including
a how-to-do-it self-reference diagram)
is way too much trouble for this format.
just, let’s admit here and now.
i’m probably never going to do
another copy-shop run in this life.
here it is now for the god-damn net.

all from vlorbik’s diner

(with brief comments)

01/13/11 our medium is handwriting: (3) photos of hand-drawn fretboards; diagrams-into-code.

01/18/11 time considered as a mod-12 sequence: improvised web-typographic diagrams for the guitar neck; rambling.

01/26/11 music theory ramble: long. “sunshine of your love” in relative-vlorbik notation. (much) more.

08/19/14 songwriting 201you know my methods, watson.

11/28/15 mel bay upside down left hand photo’ed (repeatedly) fretting strings strung for the right hand; unrelated 10-for-maria math-ramble.

rejected by Math Ed Zine

clerihews for the clerisy (~1999?)

alexander grothendiek
cleared his throat-to-speak.
his audience?—one in a million:
he was talking brazilian.

john ewing
knows what he’s doing.
you and i
will find out by-and-bay.

does not play fair
i refuse to compete with a geek
who could write th’ cours d’arithmetic.

andrew wiles
can see for miles.
what fermat claimed to know.
wiles was able (finally!) to show.

[this one’s unfair to its subject.
sir humphrey davy probably never
detested gravy, though. so there.
the second line got rewritten.

hyman bass
can [go eat grass]
the maths were quite sound
but now he wants to push people around.

i’m flat-out *going to* “obsess” about *something*…
nature or nurture, who cares, we’re all this way
in our family: what feels like “taking a thing
seriously” looks to other people like “obsession”.
i get this. (i had better.) but it’s not. now,
obsession rightly-so-called would have made me…
or any of us… a genius-level performer at *one
thing* like erd\”os or jackie du~pr\’e or something.
*maybe* nathan got that; he was *very* high-functioning
in his professional life (musical director for
touring companies; as a piano-player recording
artist, he made some great records but i’m guessing
not much money; anyway. as musical director,
he literally toured the world with the shows).
hannah learned several languages and made it
look easy… as i assure you, it is not.
and was able to get a pretty-good-in-terms-
-of-salary *library* job out of it once she
qualified with a *second* master’s degree
(“classics” turned out to be a dead-end of
instructing-indifferent-beginners, so she
bailed on that career possibility with only
a master’s degree to show for it… this was
probably wise of her. [my own pro career was
*mostly* instructing indifferent beginners,
so i can speak with some authority on this.]).

we came by it honestly. my mum was PO’d because
getting divorced distracted her in her legal
studies to the point where she was merely
*magna* cum laude; evidently she’d been shooting
for “summa”. & dad was always taking on all
these *projects* and succeeding at quite a few
of them.

okay. burning out. go read this
if you want more along these lines.

in my room

starting with the mathy stuff
on what used to be a door
at the corner of what used to
be a street: in “the livingston
library”, or, more precisely,
as i think of it, at the living-
ston “branch of the UUCE” libe,
where for “UUCE”, read th’
UU church in reynoldsburg
[ohio; do i have to tell you
*everything*?]… g-d willing
i might make it back to the
*main* branch while it still

a bunch of taped-up drawings (and
reproductions of same) by me.
the entire RHS (right-hand side,
natch) is given to various versions
of “desargues’ theorem in color”;
there’s another of these at upper-
-left (& in between, “vlorbik’s
seven-color theorem”
[in one of its
many versions]).

then the three big (eight-&-a-half-by-
-eleven) 16-point thingums; these are
versions of the “hurwitz tesseract”
(as i hereby dub it); the two 8-point
“cosets” of the normal 8-group in the
unit integral quaternions. a-four-hat,
as i like to call it. anyway.

and, illegible here more or less of course,
the back cover of an em-ed-zed (M Ed Z —
“math ed zine” to the acronym-averse).
featured here are *more* covers of MEdZ
(what else?): specifically, this very one
(#1—the “hip pocket vocab”, 2010; reissued
in digest size with new [-ly reprinted]
graphics & hand-lettered comments [same year,
i think]); K_n -slash- K_4 (a “remix” of
two “microzines” [eight pages on one side
of an 8 1/2 by 11 each] into one such);
P_2(Z_2) & P_2(F_n) (“projective planes”);
& \Bbb{Q}, \Bbb{Z}, & \Bbb{N} (“number sets”).

but enough about me. some of my *other* stuff.
r.~crumb’s _art_&_beauty_ (cover shot of mrs.~
~crumb). two “books” with comic-book-swearing
for “titles”; also clowes’ _modern_cartoonist_.
that poster of magazine covers from _starlog_.
you could look at that thing alone for quite
a while. in the right company. (alas.)
what you can’t see covering up part of this
poster (lower left) is the _comic_book_artist_
cover by i-know-not-who showing “magnus
robot fighter” clobbering an evil droid. i did
a song about fighting robots and have a soft
spot for this character.

two pics of fitzgerald & a bunch of his books; you
might also be able to see burroughs. in the brick
under the pez-head of winnie-der-pooh is a period
shot of dad early 60s. you can tell the images
of auden are *there* in my version but not who
they are images of; likewise langston hughes.

this is quite a satisfying way of making the time
go by as long as you don’t wish for somebody else
actually to *read* it…
